Everyone has a WHY. Do you know yours? Your WHY drives you in so many ways and will inspire others too. Knowing it will change your life and help you to change the world. However, it is often the hardest question to answer.
Five years ago, I had an amazing opportunity to learn from Ridgely Goldsborough, co-founder of the WHY Engine, the marketing and messaging program used by professionals worldwide to attract ideal clients based on their WHY. I was excited because I know sharing your why with others is how to be a powerful communicator.
I was also familiar with Simon Sinek’s TEDx talk, Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Action, and I understood, as Sinek explains, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy WHY you do it.” Your WHY will connect emotionally with customers and clients, and emotion plays a big part in why people buy.
Finding Your Why Can Transform Your Life
I was eager to teach Goldsborough’s WHY formula to my One Degree Shift community and private coaching clients because I know how transformative and enlightening finding your WHY can be.
Goldsborough shared nine common WHY’s that drive people to do what they do. See if you can uncover your WHY.
- To contribute to a greater cause or to help others
- To create relationships based on trust
- To make sense of the situation
- To find a better way
- To do things the right way
- To challenge the status quo
- To master things
- To clarify
- To simplify
Successful times and experiences in our lives provide clues as to why we do the things we do.
Think about a specific interaction with someone that happened at work or outside of work in the last couple of weeks that made you feel successful. Ask yourself: “What about the interaction made me feel successful?” and “Why was this important to me?” Continue asking yourself the second question until you discover which of the 9 WHY’s is your reason for doing what you do.
Goldborough’s formula is to first tell people what you believe (your why) so you can connect with those that believe what you believe. Next, tell them how you bring that belief to life. Finally, tell them what you do, what you offer, or what you have. This is how we attract, engage, and connect with amazing clients and customers and unite with others to make the difference we are called to make.
Knowing Your Why Makes Your Life More Meaningful
“The happiest and most successful entrepreneurs are in business for a reason larger than themselves,” says Marla Tabaka, a small business advisor who works with entrepreneurs around the globe. In her Inc.com article, What Is Your Why, she goes on to explain that, “the reason is because they are driven, not by fear or need, but by passion and desire; something much deeper and more meaningful.”
What’s your WHY for your life, your business, or your work?
Do you know? It’s a critical question to answer. If you want to be successful in any work that you do, you need to know WHY you’re doing it. If your WHY is big enough, you can achieve any goal you set. Finding your WHY has the power to shift your mindset and transform your life.
My mission is to transform the world — to align people with their heart’s desire and heart’s melody so they live fulfilling lives and make the difference they are meant to make. That’s a really BIG task, I know. And, it would be very overwhelming if I thought I had to do it alone. But I don’t… because my WHY includes YOU.
I am motivated to help you to live your highest purpose. I believe in your potential and I’m deeply committed to supporting your success in whatever way I can. Whether I am being a trainer and personal development coach or an inspiring speaker, I know if I help you make a shift, improve your life, and live your purpose, you’ll go on to help someone else and together we will change the world one person at a time.
That’s why I love to support my One Degree Shift community and private coaching clients and I relish in their success. I believe you can make a positive difference in the world, and I feel compelled to be a part of it. My ability to coach, train, and develop leaders to the next greatest version of themselves is one BIG way I bring my WHY to life. It is the motivation behind my life coaching and workplace learning programs and self-esteem and confidence coaching — to contribute to a greater cause and to help others. Whether I am behind the scenes or leading the way, I am looking for ways to make the world a better place and that includes coaching to make you better. Because I know, in order to make a difference, you must be different in the world.
The Influencers in One Degree Shift are driven by really big WHY’s. In our monthly gatherings, our private forum online, or in my life purpose workshop, you’ll find me encouraging and coaching others to discover their WHY and purpose in life. I challenge them to uncover the deeper answer to this one question: Why do you do what you do?
Join One Degree Shift and I will teach you the formula for discovering your WHY too. If you are anything like most of us, discovering your WHY will be almost like getting reintroduced to yourself.
